about
by mo on 05/31/2009Some basic definitions:
mokudekiru:
My name + the japanese verb dekiru, which means “can do” or “to be able to do”
daigakudeki:
Also partially my name, partially the word daigaku which means “university”. Appropriate, as I am a university student.
jdrama:
Japanese drama. TV dramas, in particular, made by Japanese broadcasting companies and shown on Japanese prime-time. Each show consists of 10-12 one-hour episodes, and runs for approximately 3 months. An under-appreciated genre, in my opinion, and thus I mostly use this blog to reflect on the delightfulness of jdrama.
bruffin:
A combination brownie + muffin. Really, brownies in muffin tins. Best served upside down. I noticed my blog has become the gathering spot for all people searching for “bruffins” over the past year.
If you’re interested check out the bruffin post.
dango:
This is dango. It is amazing.

Questions you may or may not be asking
What’s your deal with Japan?
I’ve studied Japanese for the past 8 years, which turns out to be a decent chunk of my life. I’m not really fluent but I’m decent (up to JLPT 2 as of two years ago, for those of you who know and care). I lived in Japan for a year in 2006-2007, and went to a Japanese high school there. I lived in the Kansai region of Japan and grew extremely fond of it. My heart resides in some purikura booth near a train station somewhere between central Kobe and Osaka.
So you lived in Japan? What was that like?
It was very… Japanese? Really, not possible to answer that in a few sentences, so if you’re really interested please go to my old Japan blog and you can read all about my love for ikanago, struggle with culture shock, the time I met Oguri Shun, and many other adventures as a Japanese schoolgirl.
So what do you do now?
When I’m not wishing I was in Japan or thinking of things to tweet, I can often be found in the Midwest attempting to get a computer science degree. During the summer I try to escape to places like Colorado (summer 2008) or the Bay Area (summer 2009) and experience things I don’t have at home, like mountains, oceans, or Whole Foods, and find somewhere to intern. I also make sure to always see a lot of good live music.
What is your favorite jdrama?
Manhattan Love Story (2003) written by the apparent genius, Kudo Kankuro. But I’d say this is followed closely by Kekkon Dekinai Otoko and about 12 other dramas that are amazing.
ご趣味はなんですか (What are your hobbies)?
・Making social relationship charts of jdrama characters in Omnigraffle
・Knitting
・Translating manga over at Aerandria. Right now I am working on two called Full House Kiss and Koizora Setsunai Monogatari
Which is better, tsubu-an or koshi-an?
Tsubu-an, duh.
